Project George Washington

For the last several years, thanks to the unwavering dedication of Compatriot James (Jim) Steelman, our chapter has been actively involved in an effort to see that the portrait of George Washington be returned to our local schools.

Compatriot Earl Cain visited the New York Avenue School in Somers Point on Thursday, May 3rd, for the presentation of the George Washington picture to the school. Placing these pictures back in our schools is enthusiastically supported by our National SAR organization in partnership with the Mount Vernon Society in Virginia.

Our Col. Richard Somers Chapter has now placed 4 pictures in local schools. Compatriot Jim Steelman coordinated placing pictures in two Ocean City schools and donated the funds for a third picture for Somers Point. Compatriot Bill Schmitz coordinated placing a picture in the Hess School in Mays Landing.

We thank Dr. Jennifer Luff, Director of Curriculum and Principal of the New York Avenue School in Somers Point and her assistant, Suzanne Klotz, for accepting and leading this project for the school.
